Bob DeBris was born and raised in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He studied film and photography at Banff Center, Humber College, Connestoga College, the College of Creative Studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara, and a brief unhappy stint at Cal Arts.
His work has shown in places as varied as The McCord Museum in Montreal, to the shopping carts of the Safeway in Santa Barbara. He was recently the subject of a one-man traveling show, “Twenty Years of DeBris: A Wrecktrospective,”at the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara and at Cal State Fullerton (curated by Ginny Brush). His photographs have been featured in Juxtapoz, Rolling Stone, The Oxford American, as well as book covers for Daniel and Daniel, Norton Press, and New York University Press.
The photographs on this web site represent a small fraction of his archives. For thirty years he has been photographing interesting road side attractions, old signs, programatic architecture, mobile monuments, miniature golf courses, exotic dancers, Mexican wrestlers, Hispanic Easter pageants, Gay Pride parades, snowbirds in the deserts of California, folk art installations, Elvis impersonators at Graceland, space aliens in Roswell, ventriloquists at Venthaven, and numerous people inside his own monument to true love, “The Palace of Love.”
